Abstract:

OBJECTIVE: To promote clinical accuracy, a criterial system for Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) syndromes will be needed to properly measure patients’ bodily properties.

METHODS: The quality criteria for the diagnostic scale were derived from expert consensus and existing guidelines and determined based on statistical methods of item pool establishment, item screening methods, weighting, threshold, and evaluation.

RESULTS: For each property measurement, positive or negative rating criteria were defined at each step, including literature review, clinical data, subjective screening, objective screening, item weighting methods, diagnostic threshold, internal consistency, split-half, test-retest, interrater consistency, content validity, criterion validity, structural validity, convergent validity, and discriminant validity. The evaluation of all measurement properties is performed with reference to a specific population in a specific context. The setting refers to the planning of each step, such as the basic situation, clinical presentation, design method, test conditions, and calculation method.

CONCLUSION: The guidelines represent a preliminary step toward formalizing diagnostic criteria for TCM syndromes. Future efforts should aim to achieve a broad consensus and complete the criteria.

Key words: criteria, expert consensus, Traditional Chinese Medicine syndromes, diagnostic scale, measurement property
